Case Histories

Below are some cases that we have dealt with in the past, if you wish more details, perhaps your cavy has similar symptoms, then contact me.

Jo

Jo came to the shelter with a cage mate, they did not get on, Jo developed a large sore on the middle of her back, which despite Ivomecing for mites did not respond. Unfortuantly every time we gave Jo any medicine she got tummy ache so this was not possible, so we instead taped up her back feet with elastoplast, sounds cruel but it really  worked, the sore FINALLY improved and healed totally, she lived happily with the shelter for many years.

Lucy - Nicknamed Mrs Poddy

29th January 1997 Took in Lucy, a sow with servere selnick ( totally bald !!) and pododematitus (bumblefoot), also she is lame in her back leg. Ivomeced her, she was also already on Baytril which was proving ineffective. At first housed her in shed, however she couldnt keep warm so moved her into the lounge in a box.

30th January 1997 Rang vets regarding her bumblefoot, she needs a medicine called Fulcin which is a form of Griseofulvin, in the meantime we should soak her feet in oils such as tea tree oil diluted in vegetable oil. Also for her lameness we are trying intensive vitamin C and calcium supplements.

2 February 1997 As Lucy seems stronger bathed her today, definately brighter. Some fur regrowth

4th February 1997 Got the fulcin at last, dosing her twice a day

17th February 1997 Mrs Poddy is much better, she has put on weight and has alot of fur regrowth, and her feet have gone down alot ,however some ulcers have developed on her feet so our vet recommends we put her on an antibiotic Tribrissen to finish of the job that fulcin started

20th February 1997 Mrs Poddy's owner rang again, she is keen to have her back but accepts she need to finish her antibiotics. She is visiting on Saturday

Mrs Poddy went home and is fairing very well.

Eunice, Bonzo and Daisy

19th January 1997 Taken in today from someone who I quote' just couldnt be bothered' Bonzo and Eunice had severe selnick and were covered in some sort of cream so had to be bathed straight away. Also dosed them with Ivomec. Daisy is less severe so just Ivomeced her.

2 February 1997 Second dose of Ivomec, Daisy is now called buttercup and is housed with one of my boars, I've fallen for her, danger of the job, Bonzo and Eunice are recovering nicely, and also already have a home waiting to go to.

15th February 1997 Bonzo and Eunice went to new home, new hair growing nicely

Daisy was renamed as Buttercup, she lived in the shelter  for some time but sadly died of an unknown cause, she is remembered in our Cavyland Memorial page

Meadow

Meadow was found in a field local to us, she had a very bad skin condition and pneumonia. The pneumonia was treated easily by our vet with a course of Baytril anti biotics, she also had to be kept warm so she lived inside. The skin condition was harder to treat. Guinea pigs that live out of doors can catch a fungal skin condition and this is what Meadow had, we tried Ivomec for mites with no avail, meadow was very itchy, especially around her face, and each of her hairs was coated in a dandruff at the bottom. Eventually we found a cure, we had to massage Meadow twice a week with a blend of essential oils, and then bath her 4 days later, she smelled beautiful and it worked too, if you would like the recipe please mail me. Meadow went on to live happily for another 6 months, we think she was an old lady when she came to us so she was happy. Below is a calender of our happenings with Meadow.

Meadow

30th December 1996 Meadow is a little coronet sow that was found left in a field on a very snowy and cold morning. All in all she is in remarkably good condition, she has selnick which she is being treated for , and her claws and teeth were long, however she IS tame, and HAS been loved and is fairly young, so has she escaped !! who knows.

9th January 1997 Meadow had to be moved into our indoor hospital cages as she has a severe respitory infection. Treating with Sudafed and Baytril, for the infection and a tonic to give her a boost

10th January 1997 Discovered Meadow has earache and is now constipated, Panalog for the earache and natural remidies for the other

12th January 1997 Gave her a dose of 0.5ml liquid parafin as natural remedies had no response

13th January 1997 Second and final dose of liquid parafin ( only ever give 2 ), meadow seemed better so tried her with a placid pig friend, this totally panicked her and it took three hours of cuddles to calm her down, she's very nervy and very poorly

14th January 1997 Poor Meadow now has Diahorea, Diocalm for that, she is still eating though.

16th January 1997 Meadow has to go to the vets, she is wheezing badly, the vet confirmed that she had pneumonia, and after a discussion decided to put her on the anti biotic tribrissen, this is usually for dogs, so we have to give her 1/32 of a tablet, twice daily

30th January 1997 After 7 days anti biotics Meadow seems much better.

20th February 1997 Meadow is now fully recovered although still a little thin, she is very cheeky!!. She will now have to be isolated for the rest of her life as she may be a carrier of pneumonia. She will remain here.

Sassy
Sassy was found in a pet shop pregnant, so we bought her home and fed her up, she gave birth at a vey young age to 2 babies and was a great mum. The babies went to a new home and sassy to a show career winning a trophy for best pet. Sassy sadly died recently from old age, she wasnt that old but being pregnant at such a young aga, aged her a great deal, she is remembered in the Cavyland memorial page

Pebbles
Pebbles was born here and weighed in at 1 and a half ounces !!! Her mum couldn't look after her so she was reared by hand and is now almost a year old .If you want to see notes on rearing babies Click Here. Pebbles died at the age of 3 years, which is quite good for a runt

Becky & Button
Were 2 sister found in a terrible state at a garden centre. They were pregnant at only 9 weeks and almost bald. Taken home and fed up they were nursed back to health. Sadly both lost thier babies but have since had more, still nervy they have fitted in well with our quieter members.

Merlin
Merlin got a bad abcess on his dewlap and was put under anisthetic and it was removed, abcesses are very toxic but luckily it didnt burst. One week later he ripped his stitches and the wound got infected, but after a course of Baytril he was fine, he is now a year old and recently got 4th best in show.

Toffee
Toffee had her babies overnight and got one stuck, she was rushed to the vet and he removed it and gave her a shot of anti biotic, she is now fine.

Emerald
Unknown to us Emerald has a heart defect and passed it on to her unborn litter. Sadly they all died and she was in a mess. We helped her give birth and gave her some Baytril, still she was as thin as a rake, but now she fat and fine, and she will never be bred from again

Simba
Simba really was our worst case to date. He had severe Selnick, a nasty skin infection and a wound the size of a fifty pence piece. He was Ivomeced twice and had to have sedatives to calm him down. Also he was on Baytril for 3 months, we nearly had him put down !! It was a very slow recovery, we had to use hydro cortizone cream to stop the itching of the healing wound or he scratched it open again, now he is fine and has no scars of his ordeal.

Gizmo - September 96
Gizmo was returned to us from a garden centre, all his hair fell out, a big deal for a texel. Taken to the vets he had no skin problems, so it is assumed it was either hormonal or stress, thankfully, it regrew. If put under stress all our good work is undone so Gizmo will stay in the center permenantly

Poppy - 13th November 1996. Poppy was brought to us by a concerned owner whose vet was not able to treat Poppy, she had a relativly simple, but nasty looking , eyelid infection. It took weeks of Baytril antibiotics to clear up. Also she is paralysed on that side of her face so needs eyedrops daily and careful supervision, she will remain in the centre.Poppy spends her time swpping from our 'case histories page to our Present cases page
